Reach for this book when your teenager is looking for a high stakes adventure that explores the gray areas of morality and leadership. While it is technically a zombie story, it functions as a gritty survivalist drama that asks what makes us human. B Smith, a revitalized zombie who retains human consciousness, must lead a group through a London overrun by both mindless monsters and fearful, violent humans. It is an ideal pick for readers who enjoy dystopian settings but are ready for more complex questions about prejudice and the necessity of teamwork in impossible circumstances. Because the protagonist is a self aware zombie, the book offers a unique lens on the feeling of being an outsider. It balances intense action with internal reflection on identity and the burden of command. Parents should be aware that the horror elements are visceral and the world is bleak, making it most appropriate for mature middle schoolers and high school students who can handle dark themes and stylized violence.
