Reach for this book when your child is fascinated by how things work or is facing a daunting project that requires long term persistence. This classic adventure follows young inventor Tom Swift as he tackles a massive engineering challenge: boring a giant railway tunnel through the Andes Mountains. It is an ideal pick for children who love machines, trains, and the idea of using science to solve impossible problems. While the story is an exciting race against time and saboteurs, it emphasizes the importance of resilience and creative thinking. Originally published in 1916, it captures a sense of early 20th-century wonder toward technology. Parents should note that while the focus is on engineering and bravery, the book reflects some of the adventure tropes and language of its time, though it remains a fast paced read for middle grade students who enjoy retro science fiction.
