Reach for this book when your child is feeling the pressure of competition or needs a lighthearted way to process the fear of public embarrassment. In this installment of the My Weirder-er School series, A.J. and his classmates at Ella Mentry School face off against their rivals in a high-stakes charity softball game. Guided by the eccentric retired pro Mr. Ott, the students must navigate teamwork, persevere through sports-related mishaps, and deal with a truly gross penalty: the losing team has to clean the winners' toilets with toothbrushes. It is a perfect choice for reluctant readers who enjoy slapstick humor and relatable school-day anxieties. The story focuses on resilience and the importance of having fun regardless of the scoreboard, making it an excellent bridge for kids moving into independent chapter book reading.
